- As of the service period in Spring 2009 of "Seishun 18 Ticket".
The origin of Moon-light Matsuyama, Ogaki Night Rapid was a night train operated between Tokyo and Osaka since later of 1940's. In those days, Shuyu-ken (Excursion Tickets) are only tickets for excursion, but many people used this train with such tickets.
In 1968, the service section of Osaka Night Train was reduced to section between Tokyo and Ogaki, because cars for the train were changed from coaches tractived by a locomotive to electric cars, whose shed was built at Ogaki. Since then, it was called Ogaki Night Train but many people remained to use the train with Shuyu-ken.
As soos as Seishun 18 Ticket had been begun to release in 1979, Ogaki Night Train had so great popurarity, because it was very convinience to go from Kanto (East) region to Kansai (West), San-in, Sanyo and Shikoku Regions, that you had to stand the platform in Tokyo which the train arrived for many hours before the train came or you would not be able to have your seat.
Until 1996, cars for Tokai Express had been used for Ogaki Night Train, and the cars for it was changed to ones for Wide View Tokai Limited Express due to change of Tokai Express to Wide View Tokai Limited Express, and Ogaki Night Train was also changed to Moonlight Nagara.
Since Mar. 18, 2007, Moonlight Nagara has changed to train with all seat reserved except a limited section, from Toyohashi to Ogaki Terminal.
