A "Chochin Bloomer".
A gym suit for schoolgirls of Japan are white short-sleeved shirt and pants. Before 1980's, "chochin bloomers" (this words means "bloomers like Japanese lanterns, because the swellings of the bloomers are like Japanese lanterns) are used as pants for elementary schoolgirls' gym suit.
A Previous Bloomer.
For schoolgirls of junior/senior high school, normal bloomers (not "chochin" bloomers) are worn as pants of gym suits. Of course, elementary schoolgirls also wore normal bloomers after "chochin bloomers" had been ablished.
Present Gymsuit.
But in 1993, schoolgirls of one junior high school in Shikoku Region insisted that wearing bloomer was very embarrassed because their thghs were shown. This claim was extended among Japanese schoolgirls of junior/senior high schools rapidly, so bloomers were abolished, even in elementary school, and short pants were choosen for schoolgirls' gym suit. Today, bloomers for schoolgirls are not produced, so you have to order custom-made.
